WHITTLESEY RESIDENTS SHOW THEY HAVE PRIDE
Local Whittlesey residents showed their ‘Street Pride' on Saturday when they attended a litter pick in the Benwick Road area of the town. It was the idea of residents and councillors who had recently attended a Street Pride workshop and who thought that this gateway to the town could benefit from a community clean up event.
The Street Pride scheme, part of the Fenland District Council's Streets Ahead initiative, helps members of the community to work together to improve their local environment for the benefit of all.
The 35 strong band of volunteers spent around 2 hours litter picking along the road side where litter had accumulated. The volunteers, who included Fenland District Council's own award winning Street Pride team, managed to collect over 40 sacks of litter from the relatively small area. Some of the larger objects collected included estate agents boards, an old road sign, a car wheel, a child's bike and even a complete hi-fi system (minus the speakers)!
The next meeting of the Whittlesey Street Pride group takes place on Wednesday 28 February, at 7.30pm in the Whittlesey Town Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend and discuss how further improvements to the town can take place with the enthusiasm and community spirit of local volunteers.
